Almost two years after the 2022 National Census, the final results corresponding to the province of Jujuy are processed and displayed in statistical graphics. The Sociodemographic Department of the Social and Population Statistics Division presented the main demographic indicators on the website of the Provincial Directorate of Statistics and Censuses (Dipec), which can be consulted at dipec.jujuy.gob.ar.

Jujuy has a population of 811,611 people. They are distributed as follows: in the Cochinoca department 15,054, in El Carmen 122,366, in Dr. Manuel Belgrano 320,990, in Humahuaca 20,914, in Ledesma 94,252, in Palpalá 65,541, in Rinconada 1,802, in San Antonio 6,729, in San Pedro 88,241 , in Santa Bárbara 20,499, in Santa Catalina 2,646, in Susques 4,098, in Tilcara 14,721, in Tumbaya 5,381, in Valle Grande 2,509 and in Yavi 25,868.

The departments with the highest population density, that is, inhabitants per square kilometer, are Dr. Manuel Belgrano (154.8), El Carmen (134.6), Palpalá (134.4) and at the antipodes are the Puno jurisdictions Rinconada ( 0.3), Susques (0.4) and Santa Catalina (0.9).

If the data obtained is compared with that of the last 2010 Census, the only departments where the population decreased are Rinconada (-27.6%) and Santa Catalina (-5.5%). While San Antonio had a growth peak of 50.7%, well above the average for Jujuy (20.5%) and the country (14.4%). In the remaining districts the variation was from 2.4% (Valle Grande) to 26.1% (El Carmen).

GROWTH IN 12 DEPARTMENTS | ONLY IN RINCONADA AND SANTA CATALINA DID THE POPULATION DECREASE COMPARED TO 2010.

The population in collective housing is higher in Dr. Manuel Belgrano (1,439) and in San Antonio there is none.

Regarding the proportion with respect to sex registered at birth (to comply with Indec’s statistical quality standards, category Yavi has the highest number of women 53.6% and Santa Bárbara the highest number of men 50.88%.

The comparison of the population pyramid between 2010 and 2022 is very interesting. It reflects that there was a widening, that is, a marked growth, in the young and adult inhabitants of Jujuy, especially in the categories from 20 to 24 years old to 40 to 44 years old. While in older adults symmetry is lost in favor of women.

AGING INDEX | THE HIGHEST IS IN TUMBAYA AND THE LOWEST IN SUSQUES.

Another relevant fact, and with strong economic implications, is that Jujuy has a total potential dependency index of 49.8, theoretically inactive young people are 35 and older people are 14.8. This index is the relationship between the potentially inactive population (0 to 14 years and 65 years and older) and the population in theoretically active ages (15 to 64 years). The highest is in Rinconada with 63.4 and the lowest in San Antonio with 46.8.

While the aging index is 42, that is, the number of people aged 65 and over per 100 people between 0 and 14 years old. It is highest in Tumbaya (52), Dr. Manuel Belgrano (50) and Palpalá (49) and lowest in Susques (21) and Santa Bárbara (29).
