In the last Olympic Games in Japan, in 2021, they were one of the most talked about novelties in the Olympic Village. The ‘anti-sex’ beds provoked all kinds of reactions three years ago. But the organizers of Paris 2024 have decided to repeat the experience with these … cardboard beds, which are intended to enhance the rest of athletes. The structure of the bed is made of cardboard, as well as the rest of the parts that make up the mattress. The bed is made up of three pieces and each one is made from greater to lesser hardness.
The Organizing Committee will install 16,000 beds with the aim of promoting rest during the event. In addition, athletes will be able to personalize their rest according to their individual needs thanks to a special application that, based on the weight and height of the athlete, will recommend the optimal combination of the three pieces. In fact, the pillows are made of the same compound as the rest of the bed.
The main reason for choosing these beds, ‘baptized’ on social networks before the Tokyo Games, responded to a commitment by the organizers of the Olympic Games to sustainability and a way to protect athletes. Furthermore, the choice of cardboard as the main material not only responds to ecological criteria, but is also part of an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of the Games.
Resistance tests
In the last Tokyo Games, the beds were designed to support up to 200 kilograms. To check its strength, several tests were carried out, including throwing weight on the beds, to ensure its solidity.
The name ‘anti-sex’ beds was given because, in addition to sustainability, they were created to reduce possible intimate encounters between athletes, since those Games had to be delayed a year due to coronavirus.
From July 26 to August 11, the Paris Olympic Village will host around 10,000 athletes distributed in 82 buildings and 7,200 rooms.
