This May 6th, two of the most visible figures of the Green Alliance left their party after the alleged acts of corruption in the Risk Management Unit (UNGRD) became known, which would involve several officials from the government of President Gustavo Petro, as well as two Green militants: Sandra Ortiz and Iván Name.

On Monday afternoon the co-founder of the community, Antanas Mockus, made his resignation formal through a letter to the National Directorate. And just an hour later, the former mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, did the same.

“I agree with what was expressed by Professor Antanas Mockus and I retire with him from the Green Party,” were the words of the former senator, who sounds like a possible presidential candidate in the 2026 electoral process. Thus, as of this Monday, the former mayor is without a formal party for her eventual campaign.

According to López, he came to the party “with the Green wave, which inspired millions of citizens to enter life and public service. I’m leaving because ended up co-opted and controlled by a Petrist minority that does not represent or honor the values, practices and principles that I have defended and practiced in my life,” he said.

The Green Alliance had already requested a “prompt and rigorous investigation by the authorities to determine the veracity of what was said” against Ortiz y Name, president of the Senate. Both will be subject to a formal investigation by the party’s Ethics Control Council.

There has been deep fragmentation in the Green Party for some time, so a possible split is rumored, which would end with the departure of more members and the formal division of the community.

“In the Green Party, I would say, we need to be in independence and most likely eThis is going to end in a split. I hope there is a split where it is respected that those of us who practice the politics of convictions can be outside this government,” said the Green representative, Carolina Giraldo.
