The teachers of the Aluna and Quinto Centenario institutions of Santa Marta carried out a day of protest to claim that they have not received their salary for almost three months, putting at risk the provision of educational services to thousands of students.

There are around 100 teachers who have not received their salary from the operator of these institutions, which is the Emanuel International Bible Center (CBI), led by Pastor Ángel Flórez.

What the teachers explain is that they started work on February 5, initially, with a 2-month contract. The first payment for this first contract was made, but the one corresponding to March is still pending.

The teachers state that at the end of April they were given a fixed-term contract which ends in December, but they actually know if the operator is complying with the legal conditions of the employment contracts because they state that several officials became ill and when requesting health care could not be attended to.

In the two institutions, nearly three thousand students between the ages of 5 and 16 receive classes, so the situation experienced by the teachers is worrying since if they cease activities, the students would be left adrift while the responsible parties.

“The teachers on campus work with all the love in the world, ensuring the well-being of our students, but we can’t stand it; Many of us do not even have a way to meet the needs in our homes and if the operator defaults on their payments, like a domino effect this affects us enormously in our homes,” said one of the teachers.

The rapid intervention of the Secretary of Education is expected to resolve this difficult situation with the teachers and the operator in charge of the schools.
