MOSCOW, Russia.- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, arrived on Tuesday afternoon (local time) in this capital, where he will begin a working visit to address the priorities of the bilateral agenda after the re-election of President Vladimir Putin.

The Head of State will also participate in the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union, all within the framework of the 64th anniversary of the reestablishment of our diplomatic relations and the 79th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The stay occurs in a week of coincidences in the ties between both governments and peoples; Because this May 8, in addition to celebrating the anniversary of the reestablishment of bilateral relations, the tenth birthday of the signing of the treaty to establish the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) by the presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, an integrationist bloc, will be commemorated. to which Kyrgyzstan and Armenia would later join.

Cuba has been an observer state of the EEU since December 11, 2020, following the resolution adopted by its Council in October of that year. During the conference, the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, the highest conclave of the organization, will meet, in which the Heads of State of the member countries meet.

The Cuban President will participate for the first time, in person, in these summits, although since December 2020 he has done so virtually twice a year, when they are held, generally in May and December of each calendar, an expression of the will of Cuba to strengthen its ties with the EAEU.

Another coincidence of the visit is that this May 7, President Vladimir Putin assumed, for the fifth time, a six-year mandate at the head of the Russian Federation, after the recent elections, when he received the affirmative vote of more than 87 percent. of the electorate, the highest scrutiny he has received in the presidential elections he has run for.

The official delegation of the Greater Antilles is made up of the member of the Political Bureau and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla; the head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Party, Emilio Lozada García; the first vice minister of Foreign Trade, Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, among other directors.

The Cuban delegation will participate this May 9 in the military parade and other activities in commemoration of the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.

This is a tradition maintained by the Russian Federation of the former Soviet Union, whose people were the main protagonists in the fight and defeat of Nazi Germany and in which they sacrificed more than 20 million lives.

The first such parade was held on June 24, 1945 on Red Square in Moscow. May 9 is commemorated as Victory Day against Nazi fascism in World War II, when, in 1945, the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany to Soviet troops in Berlin occurred.

This is Díaz-Canel’s fourth visit to Russia in his role as Head of State. He was there in 2018, 2019 and 2022, stays in which he met with President Putin, and during which official, business, commercial, cultural agreements, among others, were signed, in compliance with the consensuses reached between both statesmen.

Relations between Russia and Cuba are described as excellent by their governments, which give them a high priority. They are relationships described as strategic by their governments. In bilateral ties, which are developing positively, the historical ties of friendship that unite their peoples stand out.

Both nations maintain a systematic exchange of high-level delegations, sessions of the mixed commission and other meetings, which in compliance with the agreements between Díaz-Canel and Putin have been creating more favorable conditions for economic, trade and investment relations.

It is the objective of the two governments to raise economic-commercial relations to the same level as political and diplomatic relations.

Russia is involved in the materialization of important projects of the Cuban Economic and Social Development Program until 2030 (PNDES) in branches such as energy, industry, transportation, among others.

There is also dynamic growth in tourism, with an increase in travelers to the Greater Antilles. Last year, more than 185,000 tourists from this country visited and this year it is expected to exceed 200,000, driven by the increase in flights and the use of MIR cards in the Cuban banking system, among other facilities.

Furthermore, Cuba’s gratitude for the historical support of the Russian Federation for the resolution against the blockade and against the inclusion of Cuba in the spurious list of countries sponsoring terrorism is permanent.
