There is expectation in the country for the last debate of the bill that seeks to prohibit bullfighting In colombia. The debate was scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm, but at 3:30 pm the agenda had not yet been started in the House of Representatives.

The representative to the Chamber José Jaime Uscátegui proposed the postponement of the agenda due to the corruption cases of recent days in the country.

The vote was 70 for NO postponement and 57 for YES. That is, the debate must take place.

The mayor of Manizales, Jorge Eduardo Rojas, intervened in the debate and made reference to the Law 1025 of 2006through which it was declared as cultural heritage of the Nation to the Manizales Fair and the Manizales Bullfighting Fair.

The president read Article 2: “Declare the municipality of Manizales and its inhabitants as the origin and managers of the bullfighting tradition in Colombia and in America and recognize them in all their cultural and artistic expressions as an integral part of the identity and culture of Caldas “.

He immediately asked “to look at what each region feels and not just what the people feel” and added that prohibiting bullfighting would be a “very hard blow for the economy of my city.”

Rojas also referred to the direct and indirect jobs generated by bullfighting, where he mentioned the sellers of cobs, hats, carts, among others, “who live up to a year off bullfighting week. It is not easy to make an economic conversion.” . In addition, he highlighted the $20 billion that the Bullfighting Fair generates during the Manizales Fair.

That’s why, He insisted to the House regarding the ban: “My people are going to be left without jobs and without resources.”

And he concluded: “Recognize the culture of the Manizaleeño, both those who do not enjoy it and those who do.”
