A traffic accident that occurred this Tuesday in Holguín left at least twenty people injured, according to official sources.

The incident occurred in the town of Siboney, in the Holguín municipality of Cacocum, when a private passenger transport truck left the road due to a tire explosion.

The truck, which covered the Holguín-Bayamo route, was traveling with 30 passengers on board, according to some reports. They were transferred to different medical institutions to receive care.

The local newspaper Now! reports that 29 injured people were taken to Holguín, where they received first aid at the Vladimir Ilich Lenin hospital.

A pregnant woman at 25.7 weeks of gestation was admitted to the Perinatology Service of this center, “without any complications, but under surveillance by a multidisciplinary team.”

The remaining 28, the report states, “were transferred to the Provincial Trauma Care Center, which is located in the Lucía Íñiguez Landín surgical clinical hospital with timely multidisciplinary evaluation and follow-up, after carrying out the required complementary measures and going through the necessary diagnostic means.” .

According to Dr. Marcos Ramos Serrano, vice surgical director of this institution, he explained that at first five patients were evaluated as possible Code Red due to their injuries, but he said that “this changed favorably.”

In that report, it was stated that none of the injured required surgery in the operating room “for the moment.”

However, an update on the station’s networks Radius Angle He noted that two patients had to be treated in general surgery, while another had to be treated by Neurosurgery.

In addition, he noted that seven patients were reported with Code Yellow with head trauma, while ensuring that “another four patients were transferred from the scene of the incident to the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes hospital in Bayamo.”

With the latter, the number of injuries would be greater than 30, if there were no rectification in the figure.

Although according to the authorities, fewer accidents were recorded in 2023 than in the previous year, these events continue to be common on Cuban roads, and leave a high number of deaths and injuries.

The poor condition of the roads due to lack of maintenance, the technical problems of the vehicles – many of them having been in operation for a long time – as well as the lack of attention and disrespect for the right of way by the drivers, are among the main causes of these events.
