The “Guardians of the Hillside” program begins in Manizales

This Tuesday the “Guardians of the Hillside” program began in Manizales, with the participation of 80 female heads of household who will be in charge of maintaining and cleaning slopes to prevent landslides and flooding. This initiative, now expanding to rural areas, will strengthen the protection of the inhabitants and the development of the municipality.

These women, from vulnerable communities, are part of four fronts and will be responsible for various tasks, such as maintenance, spraying, cleaning ditches and canals, georeferencing and community activities in risk areas. Their work will contribute significantly to the mitigation of natural disasters and the care of the environment.

The “Guardianas de la Ladera” program is led by the Risk Management Unit (UGR) and has an investment of 2,700 million pesos, thanks to an inter-administrative agreement with the Metropolitan Cleaning Company EMAS by Veolia. This joint effort will allow for permanent maintenance of risk mitigation works in the urban and rural areas of Manizales.

Diego Armando Rivera Gutiérrez, director of the Risk Management Unit, highlighted the importance of this program as a fundamental part of the DNA of Manizaleños and of the municipality’s planning instruments.

“EMAS will contribute 30% and the Manizales Mayor’s Office will contribute 70%, this in order to carry out permanent maintenance of the different risk mitigation works in the urban and rural areas; Thus, this cutting-edge program at the national and international level will be stronger and with greater scope to guarantee that the works support the development processes of the municipality. “There will be 80 guardians on four fronts.”
