Deportes Iquique took advantage of the downtrodden Pumas to score their fifth victory and sink them to the bottom of the standings.

The other match that opened date 9 of the 2024 Women’s Championship was held from 11:00 a.m. at the Cesare Rossi Banchero Complex. Deportes Iquique hosted Deportes Antofagasta and took the three points, thanks to a comfortable 2-0 victory.

The dragons arrived quite a bit from the beginning and scared Tania Ulloa’s goal. The Pumas looked well stopped and the local team did not have much clarity to finish on goal. Candy Schencke was the one who generated the most football and tried with all the forwards, who were not very good.

Little by little Antofagasta took the ball but it was difficult for them to generate. In any case, Jaidy Ventes was comfortable in goal and with her defenders to capture the arrivals. In 32′ Iquique was able to open the account but they were offside and they annulled that goal.

But they were superior and they would make it clear before the end of the first half. A cross shot by Katherine Cubillos was wrongly cleared by Ulloa; However, Kathalina Guerrero appeared to capture the ball and connect it to the goal and thus make it 1-0 for the dragons in 40′.

The same player made it 2-0 at 43′ when she escaped from the left and beat the center backs with a powerful left footed shot. They went to halftime with a partial victory for Deportes Iquique, which never let Deportes Antofagasta be a deep team.

Second time

The second half began with a very imprecise Iquique and an Antofagasta that wanted to get out of the bottom of the table so they were very proactive. The dragons, however, had them trapped in the middle of the field. For the Pumas things went uphill with the expulsion of Yenifer Villarroel at 55′.

Deportes Iquique’s pace dropped and actions remained stuck in the middle of the field. The last play of the match was, precisely, a goal by Deportes Antofagasta but it was annulled due to an advanced position. And with a lot of friction and several breaks for medical attention the meeting ended.

It was a 2-0 victory for Iquique, adding 16 points and momentarily placing them in fourth place, waiting for the rest of the match. The Pumas, meanwhile, remain last with just one point. On date 10 Deportes Iquique will visit the University of Chile and Antofagasta will be free.
