The events occurred in the Naranjal village, a rural area of the municipality of Suárez, where armed men arrived to shoot and murder the woman.

Cifuentes was recognized for being the founder of the Cordillera Workers Association, in addition to having been part of the Community Action Board of the El Naranjal village.

The Institute of Development and Peace Studies, Indepaz, stated that the Ombudsman’s Office had already issued early warnings that indicated risk scenarios for human rights defenders and social leaders in the municipality of Suárez.

According to the Institute, armed groups in territories like Suárez impose norms and other forms of social control, leaving those who represent some type of leadership vulnerable.

Meanwhile, the representative to the Chamber for Cauca, Juan Pablo Salazar, asked the authorities and communities to do everything possible to investigate the violent event, in order to know the reasons for the crime and find the whereabouts of those responsible.
