Eight minors have died from malnutrition and 1,092,000 people are fed less than three times a day

Malnutrition in Antioquia, so far in 2024, has worrying figures. In Colombia, 392 thousand children under five years of age suffer from chronic malnutrition, and in the department of Antioquia, 40% of reported cases of malnutrition belong to the population of children and adolescents.

This is extremely worrying, because malnutrition can affect children’s growth, and it also decreases IQ after five fewer years of schooling.

To prevent these situations and the death of people in conditions prone to malnutrition, food banks generate projects to distribute food in vulnerable areas.

According to the director of the Association of Food Banks of Colombia, Juan Carlos Buitrago, in 2023 “41 thousand tons of products were delivered, thereby improving the nutritional situation of 1,164,000 people in vulnerable conditions.”

From food banks they collect food that, if not used, would be wasted, however, they take it to people who need it and do not have the resources to feed themselves as they should.
Director Buitrago states that “today Saciar is serving more than 169 thousand people in vulnerable conditions, improving their nutritional conditions, Saciar delivers more than 6,300 tons of products that improve the quality of life of these people.”

These initiatives serve people throughout the national territory, although figures indicate that more than 13 million people in the country do not have access to quality food that meets the nutritional standards they need.
