Last weekend, by virtue of the existing collaboration agreement between Penitentiary Institutions and the Civil Guard, a device was established for the prevention of drug trafficking in the Logroño Penitentiary Center consisting of the identification and selective registration of people who carry out visits with intimate communication of coexistence.

Before passing the respective filters and controls, prison officials and Civil Guard agents informed all visitors that “the introduction of any type of toxic or narcotic substance into a penitentiary center is classified as a crime.”

During the development of these actions, agent Dora, an almost 11-year-old German shepherd, belonging to the Cynological Service of the Civil Guard, using her developed sense of smell, marked three women as possible carriers of narcotic substances.

This fact led to them being transferred to a place authorized for a superficial search by a prison official. During its development, it was discovered that women hid 22, 24 and 48.5 grams of hashish in the vaginal area, in a bra and in a shoe.

After that, those responsible for the Logroño Penitentiary Center proceeded to draw up the relevant drug seizure records with their chain of custody, bringing the facts to the attention of the Judicial Authority.

Other surprise ‘findings’

These types of actions not only prevent the entry of narcotic substances into the prison. In 2023, a 75-year-old woman, of Spanish nationality and resident in the capital of Rioja, went to the Penitentiary Center to maintain a ‘vis-a-vis’ visit with her imprisoned son. The septuagenarian was hiding a mini mobile phone, a charger and a SIM card in her private parts, along with small amounts of hashish and heroin.
