The judge Norma Abate de Mazzucchellipresident of the Fourth Chamber in Civil, Commercial and Mines of The Rioja, This morning she presented her resignation after being denounced for demanding a bribe of $8,000,000 to accelerate a succession procedure. The measure, however, was not accepted by the Superior Court of Justice (TSJ) of the province, which decided to suspend it preventively and open an administrative summary that could lead to a trial jury.

The accusation arose when Manuela Saavedraowner of a bookstore in La Rioja, reported that Abate asked her for money to expedite a stalled succession process. The complaint, presented to the Capital Prosecutor’s Office last Wednesday, included videos showing the judge demanding payment. The case, led by prosecutor Luis González Aguirre, charges Abate with illegal exaction, a crime that can carry penalties of 1 to 4 years in prison and special disqualification of 1 to 5 years.

At 9:30 this Friday, Abate presented his resignation, but the TSJ of La Rioja rejected it. On the other hand, in an Extraordinary Agreement, the TSJ ordered the opening of a summary and the preventive suspension of the judge while the criminal process lasts.
