Orlando Polanco took to the tatami yesterday at the World Judo Championships in Abu Dhabi, although his career was brief. He lost, in his first fight, to the Japanese Takeshi Takeoka, who scored waza-ari in less than two minutes. In the end, the Asian took the silver medal, losing to his compatriot Ryoma Tanaka.
In that 66 kilogram fight, the world leader, Denis Vieru (MDA), was surprised by the defeat against the Frenchman Daikii Bouba, in the round of 32, in a competition in which the Finnish Luukas Saha and the Georgian Vazha Margvelashvili deserved the bronze medal.
The World Cup also saw actions in the women’s 57 kilograms, with podium finishes for Mimi Huh (KOR), Christa Deguchi (CAN), Jessica Klimkait (CAN) and Momo Tamaoki (JPN). In the 73s, Azeri Hidayat Heydarov was the best, leaving Tatsuki Ishihara (JPN) in silver, and Nils Stump (SUI) and Ankhzaya Lavjargal (MGL) in bronze.
Today, in the 63 kg, the Cuban Maylín del Toro will compete. Her first rival will be the well-known Brazilian Ketleyn Quadros, who, in the four fights against the Caribbean woman, has won three.
