San Juan experiences an unusual onset of snowfall: “It’s hopeful”

Almost a month before the start of winter, San Juan are experiencing days of intense cold and snowfall in the high mountain range. These precipitations generate high expectations for the year water of the province, facing a deep shortage of water.

In this framework, Zonda TV spoke with Silvio Pastore, director of UNSJ Geocriology, Glaciology, Nivology and Climate Change Studies Office and explained “It has been precipitating since Monday in the mountain range. There have already been two important events in the Mountain range in this 2024: one happened in April and this one that is happening now.”

In this line he detailed: “It fills us with hope to have a more abundant water cycle than in previous years. This beginning of snowfall is different from recent years, and can be compared with the beginnings of 1972, 1997 and even 2016, years in which we emerged from periods of very extensive droughts.

The scientist also added that these events can mark the beginning of a positive change in the province’s water cycle. “The higher rainfall they usually occur at the end of autumn or beginning of winter, with the month of June – July being the period in which we expect greater drop of snow”, he detailed.

Pastore mentioned that the influence of the phenomenon ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) contributes to greater snowfall. “We hope to receive a lot of precipitation in the mountain range to make up for what is missing in dykes and irrigation of the province”, concluded Pastore.
