The National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (INPEC) has reported on the recent frustration of a mass escape attempt at the Cúcuta Penitentiary and Prison Complex.
During routine operations, members of the custody and surveillance corps They detected a tunnel in pavilion 14with which it was intended to circumvent the security of the place in order to get out of there.

After frustrating the escape, the General Directorate of Inpec ordered several actions to address the situation
- Disciplinary Investigation: A disciplinary investigation has been launched to determine internal responsibilities and prevent future similar incidents.
- Inmate Transfer: Those deprived of liberty involved in the escape attempt will be transferred to maximum security areas. This transfer will be carried out by thoroughly reviewing the different criminal profiles of those involved.
- Infrastructure Intervention: The Penitentiary and Prison Services Unit (USPEC) has been notified to carry out an immediate intervention in the infrastructure of the affected pavilion, reinforcing security measures.
Inpec has highlighted teamwork, information collection and the expertise of its officials as the key factors for the success of this operation. Thanks to their commitment, security and order have been maintained within the country’s penitentiary establishments, fulfilling the institution’s mission.
