From Peru: Tumi Robotics lands in Chile – Mining Report

The company specialized in robotics and digital solutions, Tumi Robotics, decided to internationalize its services by arriving in the city of Antofagasta, a mining hub par excellence.

The technology company of Peruvian origin, Tumi Robotics, began its expansion and internationalization plan through Latin America starting in Chile in the strategic city of Antofagasta. The initiative had the support of Start-Up Chile, in addition to being part of the 6th generation of its “Growth” program – whose objective is to attract consolidated companies seeking to scale their businesses.

With an origin linked to the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and an offer focused on solutions that provide greater safety and efficiency in work environments through robotics and digitalization in industries such as mining, energy and hydrocarbons, The company opted for this region of Chile given its attractive portfolio of mining projects, which will exceed US$17,493 million for the next decade.

The co-founder and CEO of Tumi Robotics, Francisco Cuellar, highlighted that “both Chile and Peru They have deposits that position them as mining districts par excellencewith similar problems in terms of safety, sustainability and productivity.”

The executive added that “all of this is being addressed through the local development of innovative solutions, and synergies have been developed between both countries that seek to promote technology-based suppliers together with academia, the public sector and industry, becoming an innovation hub that can compete with METS powers such as Australia or Canada. Therefore, choosing the city of Antofagasta for our internationalization process was not a coincidence.”

For her part, Carmen Contreras from Start-Up Chile points out that “we are always happy to learn about the achievements of our startups. One of the goals we seek with our Growth program is the attraction of startups from all over the world and in this case, we celebrate the contribution that the entry of these new technological solutions means for large industries in our country.”

Expansion to Chile

It was in mid-July 2023 that Tumi Robotics joined the “Growth Generation 6” program, along with 24 other technological ventures chosen by Start-Up Chile. With this, and receiving financial support of $75 millionbegan the process of installing the company in the country.

Thus, since the end of April, The company created the Tumi Robotics subsidiary in Antofagasta, and incorporated the chemical civil engineer Jonathan Castillowho has a great track record in innovation for the mining industry, both in Chile and in the world, who will assume the role of director of the company.

The CEO of Tumi Robotics explained that the company not only seeks to have an office in our country, but also “We seek to have a strategic partner, linked to the academy, with which we can develop our products on Chilean soil, betting on enhancing synergies to promote R&D.”

Chile and Peru: strategic allies

For both Peru and Chile, there are important challenges in terms of developing mining suppliers, especially for those technology-based entrepreneurs. That is why both countries have sought, through different initiatives, to open space in new markets. This is especially relevant considering the revolution that the global mining industry is experiencing, which is betting heavily on technology to improve its environmental, social and operational performance.

According to data from PROMPERÚ, exports from Peruvian suppliers to Chile are around US$100 million annually, while for our country, PEru is the main export market according to the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations, and alone concentrates 57% of shipments from local suppliers that are made in Latin America.
