Monitoring carried out by the General Directorate of Natural Resources of the Ministry of Production of La Pampa reveals that this is a population vulnerable to various threats.
The Fauna Subdirectorate of the General Directorate of Natural Resources of the Ministry of Production is monitoring lagoons with the presence of populations of southern flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis).
It is an aquatic bird that is widely distributed in South America to the southernmost region of Argentina and Chile. It lives in lagoons, brackish marshes, marine estuaries, up to 4500 meters above sea level. Its coloration is due to the small crustaceans and organisms on which it feeds.
This species is categorized as vulnerable in the province of La Pampa. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), its conservation status is classified as Near Threatened.
The threats to which the species is exposed are the degradation of its habitat, the extraction of eggs and the alteration of its nesting places. For this reason, it is recommended not to approach, disturb or fly over sites with the presence of individuals of this species. Given this situation, this Subdirectorate maintains contact with researchers who carry out studies and projects in order for these species to develop with appropriate guidelines for the conservation of wildlife in the provincial territory.
