Chile put up a tremendous fight, but fell in agony and in a way that left the fans very upset. La Roja held on but Argentina ended up winning by the minimum score in the Copa América thanks to a refereeing that caused controversy.

The Uruguayan Andrés Matonte was the great protagonist of the day but not for a good reason. His performance generates debate on social networks, especially because of how tilted things were in favor of the Albiceleste.

An untaken penalty, a possible red card that was not reviewed by the VAR and a pinpoint goal were just part of what he left behind. That and an unusual situation that favored the trans-Andeans from beginning to end.

Chile suffers an unusual arbitration against Argentina

The Chilean team lost by the minimum score against Argentina on the second date of the group stage of the Copa América. But beyond the result, what has caused people to talk is the unfortunate refereeing that La Roja suffered tonight in the United States.

Andrés Matonte simply harmed our country with his collections, something that is evident not in words, but in actions. It all started in just 5 minutes of play, when the first controversy occurred.

Víctor Dávila went to dispute a ball and ended up receiving a slap from Cristián Romero. The striker fell to the ground in pain but the referee did not give it any importance. The ball left the court and he just came up to see it, but Carlos Orbe’s VAR didn’t call him just in case.

That would just be a warning of what would come later. A series of crosses tipped the balance in favor of Argentina until in the 26th minute they had the opportunity to vindicate themselves, but it did not happen. Gabriel Suazo received a blow from Rodrigo De Paul and the complaints immediately fell, but again the technology and the judge were silent.

This gave free rein to the Albiceleste to go for a strong leg, while Chile was limited to the fact that any touch was sanctioned. In fact, Nicolás González even knocked down Mauricio Isla with both hands, but he did not receive a verbal warning.

Thus came the goal of the trans-Andean triumph, which woke up the VAR people to review a possible offside by Giovani Lo Celso, who was almost inside the goal with the mark of Nicolás Fernández.

The decision ended up being in favor of the Albiceleste due to a millimeter error that did not leave the fans completely convinced. But was it the last? Of course not, there was still one more.

Despite the festival of blows from the Argentines to the Chileans, the reigning champions finished without yellow cards in the 90 minutes. In our country, however, Mauricio Isla and Gabriel Suazo were reprimanded for much milder infractions than those they received.

Chile adds a new controversy with the arbitration against Argentina. Just as it happened with Wolfgang Stark with the Sub 20 in 2006 or Lucien Bouchardeau in France 1998, La Roja adds a new villain to its history of bad judges in one of its matches. Or more than bad, they ended up favoring the rivals more than necessary.
