He ICT ministry released the quarterly bulletin in which it reveals how the country is doing in terms of connectivity, leaving some notable data. In the same sense, it was described that 17 out of every 100 Colombians have a fixed internet connection (at home), “evidencing the continuous increase in access in homes. Bogotá leads with 28 fixed internet accesses per 100 inhabitants, followed by Antioquia with 23 and Risaralda with 22.”

It is notable that in the fourth quarter of last year, Claro was the provider with the highest amount of revenue from the mobile business ($1.46 billion). This was followed by Tigo ($464,000 million), Movistar ($387,000 million) and WOM ($144,000 million).

According to the ICT Minister, Mauricio Lizcano, these figures show the development and deployment of infrastructure that the sector has been experiencing in recent years. “We will continue working on policies and strategies that strengthen infrastructure and internet access in the country, with the aim of closing the digital divide,” he added.

Regarding the download speed, it was observed that the country reached an average of 202 megabit per second (Mbps). The MinTIC highlighted how “the departments of Atlántico, Bolívar, Caquetá, Santander, Meta and the city of Bogotá presented the greatest variations, with increases that exceeded 70 Mbps.”

Another point to mention is that of telephone lines, since Colombia achieved a total of 87.4 million (mobile phones), which reflects a penetration greater than 100% in this service.

A new player is coming

It is worth mentioning that since this month a new player arrived in the sector in the country. This is Pillofon, the company of Mexican YouTuber Luisito Comunica, who announced it with great fanfare.

“The telephony of the cracks, in the coolest country, Colombia,” said the Mexican in a video talking about the arrival of his brand.

Pillofon, which will operate as a virtual mobile operator in the country, offers a variety of plans, such as Plan Bacano, for $10,000, includes 3GB of data for 10 days, as well as unlimited calls and messages.

It is worth mentioning that Pillofon arrived in Colombia with a 4G LTE network that is already operational in the country’s main cities, such as Bogotá, Medellín and Cali. In addition, it is working on the expansion of its 5G network.
