Eight people were captured for carrying out illegal mining on the western escarpment of Bucaramanga

Authorities reported the capture of eight more people accused of carrying out illegal mining activities on the western escarpment of Bucaramanga.

Given the complaints of illegal mining that have been presented on the western escarpment of Bucaramanga, environmental authorities announced the capture of another nine people who were caught carrying out this activity.

Those captured were found in flagrante delicto undermining and weakening the slope with inadequate practices, diverting the water flow channel to affect the ecosystem.

“We have eight arrests, including a person of foreign nationality and a woman. What is sought is to protect the biodiversity of the escarpment,” announced Captain Juan Camilo Ochoa Chacón, head of the Carabineros and Environmental Protection section of the Bucaramanga Metropolitan Police.

These people were at the disposal of the Prosecutor’s Office to be presented before a judge of guarantees for the illicit actions mentioned above.

The Mayor’s Office of Bucaramanga announced that so far this year 50 arrests have been made for illegal mining.

These operations have been carried out between the Government of Santander, the Cdmb, the National Police and the National Army, with these controls being carried out in the areas adjacent to the neighborhoods of La Feria, Condorcillo, La Joya, Campohermoso, Girardot, Zarabanda, Antonio Nariño, Don Bosco , Swamp I, II and III.

“The community is requested to maintain constant communication with the National Police to promptly address cases of illegal mining and thus avoid environmental damage. In addition to the captures, various elements used to divert the water channel and damage the environment have been seized,” added the Police spokesperson.
