Julio César Chávez and the curious reason why he is allowed to say rude things on TV

Boxing broadcasts in Mexico have something very unique during the last two decades: the participation of Julio César Chávez. No one has any doubt that he knows what he is talking about: He is the most prodigious and influential champion that national boxing has ever had. However, his interventions usually steal cameras for another reason: his fiery way of commenting on the fights. Chávez does not mince words when it comes to saying what he thinks, even if it is regularly in high-sounding language.

That, of course, has caught everyone’s attention and on social media has earned him countless memes and compilations—not to mention TikTok. Chávez insults, curses and does everything he wants. He does it true to his style, frenetic and not wanting to look good to anyone. But this way of expressing oneself has a very special permission: that of Ricardo Salinas Pliego, owner of Televisión Azteca. This is what Chávez himself said on the Master Vic podcast.

“I have the blessing and fortune that I can say whatever I want on television, even announcing my clinics, and no one can announce or say rude things on TV Azteca, other than me, because the boss, Ricardo Salinas, said that. They were all there, Luis García, Zague, all the soap opera artists and everything. Finally we were at a dinner and he said: ‘to finish I want to tell you that the only bastard who can say whatever he wants about himself is the Mexican Grand Champion Julio Cesar Chavez because he has earned it. You chin… your mother.” In addition to the rudeness, it is worth remembering that Chávez can also promote his anti-addiction clinics (recently much mentioned due to the internment of the famous fighter Shocker).

The comments of the Grand Champion They certainly make an impact. Some don’t like them, because they are very strident. But, on the other hand, there are those who say they are reflected in his points of view: that is, Chávez says what they would also say if they were in his position, and more with the adrenaline of watching a high-level fight. . It must also be taken into account that this version of Chávez is especially noticeable in Mexican fights. There he forgets any limits and even gives them instructions – and most likely they will listen to him, because the commentary table is in front of the ring. He is thus not only an analyst, but also a kind of additional coach.

In September of last year, on the undercard of Saúl Álvarez and Jermell Charlo, Chávez directly mentioned his mother to the fighters Jesús Ramos and Erickson Lubin, as he considered that the performance they were offering was extremely low. At the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, Chávez had a memorable narration in which he pointed out that the Mexican fighter had lost the fight. He did it his way: “ya chin… to his mother the Mexican.” The video, known through YouTube, has become cult in recent years.

This is Julio César Chávez and no one could say they were surprised. On camera, he reflects his authenticity and has no filter whatsoever. Likewise, when there are Mexican victories, he is the most excited of all. This has been seen when fighters like Juan Manuel Márquez or Saúl Álvarez himself have come out with their hands raised in glorious confrontations. He may like it or not, but Chávez has the permission and uses it constantly without caring what people will say.
