The department of Atlántico will have 2,000 places for access to higher education. This was confirmed to EL HERALDO by the Minister of Education, Aurora Vergara, after supporting Governor Eduardo Verano’s proposal to expand coverage so that more young people in the territory have the opportunity to become professional.

“With the ‘University in your Territory’ strategy we are expanding opportunities to access higher education for young people in this region and throughout the country. We welcome the announcement made by Governor Verano because he shows that we can consolidate actions between the national and regional governments, and they will have the support of the national government to materialize this commitment,” the senior official endorsed.

The minister explained how this strategy works. She indicated that each higher education institution to belong to the free policy must present to the national government a comprehensive coverage project, in which it explains how it will grow.

As an example, he brought up the University Institution of Barranquilla (IUB), which with its management managed to obtain approval for coverage of more than 1,000 students.

“The IUB tells us that it will grow by more than 1,000 students and with a transfer that the Ministry of Education accepts, today we can welcome this new coverage. The same is being done with the Universidad del Atlántico and we hope that many other institutions will do the same. “Those 2,000 places would be guaranteed with these two institutions,” he explained.

Vergara pointed out that if more universities in the department join the free policy, the places could be increased at a rate higher than the 5,000 students offered in Barranquilla.

“We confirm that we are ready to finance these 2 thousand places that Governor Verano De la Rosa proposes to us and if we can get all the rectors to commit to more opportunities, of course we could receive more students in the higher education system” , he pointed out.
