Students and teachers from the School of Technical Education (EET) No. 1 Doctor Herminio Juan Quirós de Colón, make wood stoves with recycled elements. The last four made were donated this week to Cáritas, a non-profit institution that will select the benefiting families.
The stoves were assembled with car tires and scraps of sheet metal donated by a metallurgical company in the area. The school and the industry are linked through the implementation of internships and production, the work modality that allows work to be carried out for third parties.
The artifacts were manufactured within the framework of professional practice projects in the institution’s workshops, by 5th, 6th and 7th year students of the technical school, led by Professor Leonardo Besson.
Professor Nicolás Lascano, head of the workshop, highlighted that “the kids see that what they do goes for someone who really needs it and it excites them. This means that the student does not miss out on professional practices. In addition, they enjoy work in a different way, they feel more committed.”
The teacher explained that the idea of making salamanders came from Professor Besson, who is “a YouTuber and one day he brought the proposal for the Rocket stoves that are from the cold regions of Europe, we modified them at school, and we decided to give them to Cáritas, which “It is a non-profit entity.”
That’s how they donated the first salamander and “the people from Cáritas liked it,” he indicated and added: “The professor perfected the system but with car tires, which are cheaper in terms of material and that’s how they are done. Improving the standard of living for neighbors who need it,” said the workshop manager.
