ABOUT THE SAMPLE

The exhibition is conceived as a journey through different works by Munari and will be displayed through large-size reproductions of several passages from his books: Le Macchine di Munari (1942) -unpublished in our language-, Supplement to the Italian Dictionary (1963) and the Children’s Series of 1945.

There will be a Games and Books Room designed as a space to live and play with Munari’s publications, many of them unpublished in our country (Pre-books, transparencies to make animations, architecture games and the 1945 series). In addition, the exhibition will have two spaces that will function as research and creation laboratories: Paper Laboratory, a space to explore the communicating possibilities of paper through the creation of illegible books and travel sculptures (pocket pop-ups) and Tactile Labyrinth. : a labyrinth of textures to investigate the communicative possibilities of materials and the sensations they produce in us. Is it possible to see with your hands? with the head and elbows?

In another room we will have the screening of ”Tempo nel tempo” to complete this range of works by the great master, who as always inspires us with his imagination, fantasy and creativity.

A SAMPLE FOR CHILDHOODS

It is very common in the field of culture to hear people say that “this is a children’s book,” or that “this music group is a children’s group.” But is there an art for childhood? Is there perhaps an adult art and another child art? What would be their differences?

The adjective infantile refers to something immature, without a defined form. It is a category that once again reflects an adult-centric perspective. Usually, when we characterize something in that way we downplay or deny it: ”don’t be childish” is a disqualifying term widely used in discussions. No one would think of saying “don’t be an adult.”

This is an exhibition that thinks of childhood as origin and power, as an expanded and absolute present. As a way of being in the world according to other logics. Childhood as a territory that represents an enigma, which can even subvert the established order.

From this perspective we conceive the exhibition “From the thing the thing is born”, as a recreational and research space, a place where those who visit it can play beyond their age and origin. We believe that direct contact with his work (far from the static display cases of museums) will allow us to know his ideas from the tactile and perceptive point of view since, as Munari said, “words cannot replace experience.” The curatorial proposal is an invitation to tour, touch, sniff, listen and manipulate this great laboratory.

ABOUT BRUNO MUNARI (MILAN, ITALY. 1907 – 1998)

Bruno Munari He worked as an architect, graphic and industrial designer, writer and pedagogue among many other professions. However, his main characteristic was being a great player and taking fantasy as the central axis of all his production. He carried out material and visual research, designed creation laboratories focused on childhood and a large number of books, games and recreational devices, understanding that today’s children will be tomorrow’s adults.

Bruno was a precursor of the book-album and on this occasion we decided to start with his books as a key to the magical Munarian universe. In his youth, Munari invented books to make his college friends laugh. When his son was born, he understood that those available in bookstores were designed to appeal to adults. That is why he began to make books himself for his child, thus the famous “Series of 45” was born.

In a time so focused on screens and visual communication, we believe that presenting a work that deals with the tactile dimension and empirical experimentation, with contact with materials for creation, is putting up a barricade. It is making available to boys and girls, families, teachers and artists a series of resources, devices and ideas that, we hope, can nourish new ways of seeing the world.
