In a joint effort between the COVIAR (Argentine Wine Corporation), INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technology) and Agroconsultation SRL, San Juan will be the scene of the first Vine Pruning Championshipan unprecedented event aimed at promoting best pruning practices and strengthening the local wine community.

What is sought is to preserve pruning techniques and also work on ways to be more sustainable when it comes to pruning. They highlighted that in varieties for winemaking or table, traditional pruning systems are followed, while there are also mechanized systems, which is where viticulture is going these days.

According to what was explained, the championship will take place in two stages: the first, of an educational nature, will offer theoretical and practical workshops on techniques of pruning; The second will consist of a regional competition 1 between producers, culminating in a great day in the field and family coexistence in a selected winery. This initiative underlines the commitment of COVIAR, INTA and Agroconsulta SRL with wine production, society and culture of San Juan.

El Podador Sanjuanino aims to improve the quality of wine production by disseminating best pruning practices, promoting the exchange of knowledge between winegrowers, generating networking opportunities between producers and experts, and making sponsors visible on an educational and productive.

This first contest will be held under the name of Mauricio Ortiz, national coordinator of the Viticultural Development Centers who recently died.

The contest will be held in the three wine development centers that COVIAR has in the province of San Juan. In fact, registrations for this contest will be made at each of the Viticultural Development Centers and at the INV.

The contest will have two stages, the first where 20 competitors will participate for each Viticulture Development center and the final where there will be 15 participants, five for each of them.

The schedule of activities will begin on June 12 at the Inta de Media Agua Extension Agency where the Viticultural Development Center is located, under the supervision of engineer Ricardo Martinez; while on June 18 the same thing will happen in Inta de Caucete coordinated by Eugenia Palomas and on June 19 the last competition will be held in San Martín.

It must be noted that a jury was established, which will be in charge of defining who the winners are in each of these competitive stages. The evaluators will be the engineer Beatríz Pugliese, the engineer Hugo Carmona and the engineer Rodrigo Cascón. For the final, the organization plans to incorporate two more juries from the institutions.

While the final will take place on July 27, at the Diápolo farm in the department of Albardón. They explained that this productive unit was taken, since it has the entire integrated circuit.

Finally, it must be said that Agroconsulta together with its suppliers are the ones who provide the elements for the development of this contest. Among the main collaborators of this initiative is Bremen, which will provide the scissors for the event.

The vice president of the Argentine Wine Corporation, Gustavo Samper, and Agroconsulta Leandro García participated in the signing of the agreement for this contest. Engineer José Molina, Coviar, Beatriz Pugliese from INTA and Betina Tomba, coordinator of the Viticulture Development Centers in San Juan, were also at the event.
