The mayor of Victoria, Isa Castagnino, signed the decree this Friday authorizing the reduction of her salary by 40 percent, in fulfillment of a campaign promise. The document was sent to the Deliberative Council for treatment, in conjunction with the new budget.
“In addition, both my salary and that of political officials have been frozen for four months, understanding the social and economic context that we are going through,” stated the municipal leader. And she added: “I am convinced that those of us who hold political positions have to lead by example.”
The decision, not exempt from pressure from some sectors of politics, opens the door to a debate that has been going on for decades and that could take place in this administration, when work begins on a new ordinance, which stops anchoring the salary of the category 1 of the municipal scale, to the salaries of officials and councilors.
Although the decree came out this Friday, Castagnino clarified that, in the first two months of his administration, 20% of his salary was donated to a foundation related to his illness. It will be remembered that, shortly after assuming her management, the mayor underwent surgery due to an anomaly in one of her organs; in fact, she took the oath via streaming.
