Subway fare: despite the ruling, the Government of the City of Buenos Aires left the cost at $650 | The Justice gave rise to the request of the GCBA

This Monday the Appeals Chamber confirmed that the rate of subway in the City of Buenos Aires will remain in $650. The ruling, the result of a complaint filed by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires (GCBA) and Buenos Aires SE Subways (SBASE), awarded suspensive effect to the precautionary measure that sought to reduce the rate.

The decision of the Appeals Chamber establishes: “Grant the complaint appeal filed by the GCBA and SBASE and, consequently, grant suspensive effects to the appeal filed through action 1107661/24.” Thus, the subway fare will not be reduced to $125, but will remain at the values updated from last Saturday. Even so, the Chamber must resolve the underlying issue regarding the precautionary measure.

Last week, Justice had ordered to the City of Buenos Aires to establish a new “fair and reasonable” rate. However, the Buenos Aires government appealed, arguing that the current rate was adequate. The judge Elena Liberatori had given to the city five days to present a rate adjustment planor the rate had to return to $125.

Now, and after the ruling in favor of the GCBA request, the Chamber must decide on the underlying issue, that is, the final subway rate. Meanwhile, the price will remain at $650with a new increase scheduled for August, which will bring the cost of the trip to $757.

The Buenos Aires government justified this increase in the subway by the need to compensate for operating costs. According to SBASE, The subway technical rate is $859.07, reflecting the real cost of the service without subsidies. The increase also seeks to reduce the weight of the subsidy on the ticket.
