Today marks nine years since the first march of the #NiUnaMenos movement and the people of Tucumán mobilized, like every June 3, towards Plaza Independencia.

The mobilization had emerged as a collective response to the femicide of Chiara Paeza 14-year-old teenager beaten to death by her boyfriend for refusing to have an abortion.

From that moment on, on that date, women, LGBT+ people and society in general raise their voices to end gender-based violence, question the patriarchal system and pay tribute to those who were fatal victims of its consequences. Despite the mobilization, the official data is still discouraging.

According to the 2023 Annual Report of the Femicide Observatory of the National Ombudsman’s Office (Ofdpn), between January 1 and December 31, 2023, 322 confirmed femicide victims were registered, which include 30 linked femicides (murders with the purpose of psychologically destroying the victim), 6 transfemicides, and 28 violent deaths of women in the context of drug trafficking and organized crime.

The total of 322 cases recorded in 2023 represents an increase of 33% compared to 2022. Always according to the Observatory, there was a femicide every 27 hours.
