On Saturday, June 1, at the intersection of Av. Gral Paz and Ignacio Risso, a man lost control of his motorcycle and skidded. Fortunately the incident did not become serious, but it could have been a tragedy. The cause of the accident was a large asphalt lift, which has been getting worse for months.

The Litoral has been reporting the poor state of many sectors of the urban ejido. The most recent note was the situation in Irigoyen Freyre, where the asphalt is so high that the cobblestones are already showing. It is a three-block stretch, between San Martín and San Luis, in the Santa Fe downtown. Potholes abound.

A detonated street that calls for a patch in the center of the city of Santa Fe

In the last official communication from the capital municipality about the patching work, it was reported that starting this Monday, June 3, the patching of Misiones Street will resume, between Beck Bernard and 12 de Octubre, a section that corresponds to the route Line 15. While From Monday, June 3 to Thursday, June 6, asphalt patching will be carried out on Irigoyen Freyre Street, between 25 de Mayo and San Jerónimo.

“Detonated”

Beyond this, that accident revived the situation on the streets of this capital from a sector of the political opposition in the Municipal Council: “The city is riddled with potholes, asphalt rises, and wells. All of this can generate road accidents, but it is also a danger for pedestrians,” Violeta Quiroz (Mesas de Trabajo-FR) told El Litoral.

The councilor introduced a draft resolution requesting that the Executive carry out an “urgent” technical-economic feasibility study to repair the asphalt lifting sector located at the intersection of Risso Street and General Paz Avenue.

“This situation is aggravated because buses circulate through General Paz, which increases the risk of accidents and damage to vehicles. The repair is urgent to guarantee road safety and the normal circulation of public and private transport,” he says in the basics.

Not only that. In a survey last month and a half, the councilor detected severe problems in Obispo Gelabert and Rivadavia, and requested the construction of a donkey’s back in San Jerónimo and Córdoba, plus the placement of a traffic light in Belgrano and Eva Perón.

Also, the signage and traffic lights of the Av. Gob cycle path. Freyre (this has already been approved by the local Legislature); the settlement of the collapse on San Jerónimo and Santiago del Estero streets; the repair of a well in Pedro Ferré at 3100, and a grader for several streets in the San José and Transporte neighborhoods, among other interventions.

“Flowered” pothole

“Before we said that the abandoned neighborhoods (in terms of urban infrastructure) were those in the north. But now it’s the whole city. The state of the streets is deplorable, with potholes, with breaks… Let’s think of a person with a disability, in a wheelchair, or an elderly person, how do they cross a street full of wells? “Quiroz asked himself.

On Roque Sáenz Peña and Crespo Street, there is a pothole “where flowers are growing. There is the municipal corralito, more or less a year ago. There are weeds, and there are flowers. “It is something unusual,” the councilor lashed out.

The councilor recalled that she entered a project (sanctioned on tables) where the Council asked the Executive to comply with the installation of the corresponding signage and traffic lights on the Freyre Avenue cycle path, in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance No. 12457.

“A serious accident can happen there. Because, for example, at Crespo and Av. Freyre, when crossing, cyclists come along the bike path and pass without looking. That should be signposted. There is an ordinance that requires signage and traffic lights on the city’s bicycle lanes.”

“Was there any municipal response regarding the bike lane? -El Litoral consulted-. “Nothing at the moment. Everything remains the same, the Freyre cycle path without signs. And the neighbors do not ask us councilors for big things. They ask for basic services,” said Quiroz.

Pothole tax

-Today there is the Municipal Road Network Maintenance Fee, commonly called the “pothole tax.” It was updated with the 2024 Annual Tax Ordinance. Do you consider that this collection is entirely allocated to the patching plans?

-With respect to that point, we present several requests for reports. Where does the money go from the expanded SEOM, which is already in force, for example? It is not known. So, I believe that the Executive must be transparent and explain to the citizens what each peso that is collected is used for. They are our representatives and must be held accountable.

Another example: the seven trucks acquired for the GSI. The purchase was made by direct contracting, within the framework of the security emergency. I think there are also other basic priorities, such as weeding or ditching. And of course, the bumping and lighting.
