The enigma surrounding the decapitated corpse of a woman found more than a year ago in Medellín finally began to be resolved. In March 2023, the authorities responded to the call of the community in the El Cucaracho neighborhood, in commune 7, Robledo. When they arrived they found in a ravine a body in a high state of decomposition, which, due to the signs of torture it presented, it was not possible to immediately recognize.

Only until June of that same year was it possible to find the identity of that body. The family of Nancy Elvira Castaño Buitrago, a 36-year-old woman, reported that they had lost track of her relative since February, exactly on the 18th, the last time they had heard from her.

That day the woman was seen entering her partner’s house., a house that was located a few meters from where the decapitated body was found in March. So the investigators began to put together clues and follow the trail of the subject identified as Nancy’s partner and it took almost a year to obtain enough evidentiary material for an arrest warrant which became effective this weekend.

The 57-year-old man was captured and must answer for femicide and forced disappearance. In the midst of the investigations, the authorities corroborated not only that Nancy was at her house on the day of the disappearance, but that the captured person had a history of violent behaviors.

Nancy’s crime was one of the 120 homicides of women that occurred in Medellín in 2023. Although the then district administration assured that there was a 14% reduction in femicides compared to the previous period, as well as a clarification rate of over 90%, another This is what several human rights organizations pointed out, stating that in dozens of cases of femicides the victims’ families were revictimized due to the lack of a real commitment from the authorities to prioritize the investigation of these deaths with a differential approach, as well as other barriers in instances before the Person’s Office, the Prosecutor’s Office, the Women’s Secretariat itself and the Metropolitan Police.

The current district administration announced this year an articulated route to combat violence against women, with which, in any case, the aggressor will be immediately captured to guarantee the life and safety of those affected.

The Medellín Sectional Prosecutor’s Office will intensify the search and arrest of those responsible for this type of events, in collaboration with Line 123 Agencia Mujer, which is the main recipient of the cases, in addition to the National Police, the Immediate Reaction Units (URI ) and the complaints room. Coordination will be carried out by the Center for Comprehensive Care and Investigation against Domestic Violence (CAVIF) and the Purple Patrol of the National Police.

According to the sectional director of the Antioquia Prosecutor’s Office, Yiri Milena Amado, Robledo, Candelaria, Villa Hermosa and Aranjuez They are the sectors with the greatest impact on women in matters of domestic violence. Sundays are the days that they violate the most. With this data, according to the official, the Prosecutor’s Office is advancing a strategy to focus attention on women in these areas.
