With 96 votes in favor and 30 against, the plenary session of the House of Representatives approved in the last debate the draft statutory law that determines the integration and structure of the agrarian and rural jurisdiction system in Colombia.

After the vote, Justice Minister Néstor Osuna considered that “it is very good news for Colombian justice. We already have a statutory law of agrarian jurisdiction, so that finally, after so many years, rural disputes can be resolved fairly, in law, through the application of the peaceful manner. “It has been an initiative of the Government, in compliance with the Peace agreement, but it has had consensus with even opposition parties, as well as the collaboration of the judicial branch at the head of the high courts.”

For his part, the Minister of the Interior Luis Fernando Velasco stated that “Colombia will have judges dedicated to resolving agrarian conflicts throughout the country, and peasants will have guarantees to resolve conflicts related to land ownership.”

The initiative is one step away from becoming law of the Republic. The text must be reconciled by the Senate and the House and will subsequently be sent to the legal secretary of the Presidency so that President Gustavo Petro can sanction it and make its entry into force official.
