In Pereira, 4,147 students have some type of disability. Among them, 121 students have hearing disabilities, 193 have physical disabilities due to mobility, 1,260 have intellectual disabilities, 1,850 have psychosocial mental disabilities, 481 have multiple disabilities, 153 have autism spectrum disorder, 82 have irreversible low vision, and 7 have total blindness. For this reason, Social Manager María Irma leads, together with the work team of the Ministry of Education, strategies aimed at guaranteeing that students and their families have access to inclusion programs and social opportunities provided by the Mayor’s Office of Pereira.

“You reflect the love with which you teach and accompany our boys, girls and young people with disabilities, thank you very much, you count on us, on my work and that of my team and we invite you to continue giving hope to our boys and girls” said Social Manager María Irma.

In general, seven types of disabilities are identified, such as visual, auditory, psychosocial, cognitive, physical, multiple and deafblindness.

Likewise, there are other types of conditions that are especially addressed by the Mayor’s Office of Pereira, through the Ministry of Education, including specific disorders due to school learning and attention deficit, where there is a priority offer, achieving coverage of 1,094 students.

Another key aspect of inclusion focuses on students with highly complex illnesses, who are guaranteed home care, hospital classrooms or a personalized approach in educational establishments, as explained by Deisy Herrera, Director of Coverage at the Ministry of Education.
