Connect university research with the solution of the country’s problems › Cuba › Granma

Developing a science that helps solve the problems faced by society is the maxim that has guided the work of the Center for Chemical Bioactives (CBQ) – attached to the Marta Abreu de Las Villas Central University – which recently received the document that endorses the CBQ-AgroG in the Central Registry of Fertilizers, of the Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba.

In the midst of difficulties in importing products intended for soil fertilization, the Villa Clara scientific institution makes available to the agricultural sector a bioproduct made in conjunction with the Institute of Plant Biotechnology (ibp), which is obtained through microbial fermentation, with local raw materials and which is recommended to increase yields in crops such as beans, tomatoes, tobacco and coffee, just to name a few. Among its benefits, the increase in the percentage of seed germination and the promotion of the development of flowers and fruits stands out.

This result joins another great effort: the development of the phase III clinical trial Efficacy and Safety of

Dermofural 0.15% as a treatment for bacterial infections in diabetic foot ulcers, whose documentation is already in the Center for State Control of Medicines, Equipment and Medical Devices (Cecmed), as explained by Doctor of Science Zenaida Rodríguez Negrin, professor head of the Central University and general director of the CBQ.

Furvina, obtained by its researchers, is the active ingredient from which Dermofural is obtained, at the Roberto Escudero Pharmaceutical Laboratory Company; Furvinol, for veterinary use, and Vitrofural, a chemical sterilant for culture media, whose use is widespread in Cuba and which is exported to five countries.

In the case of Dermofural, its fungicidal action is already patented, and the current study would be for its registration as a bactericidal, which would confirm its double action in the treatment of diabetic foot.

Among the nine products and services that the Center has, there are also the soft propolis extract and the 12% hydroalcoholic tincture of propolis, which replace imports in the Company Suchel Camacho, sa, as well as toxicological evaluation services of products, chemical-physics of water and microbiological analysis of water and food.

For its contribution to a science that is not disconnected from reality, the CBQ recently received the status of National Vanguard, which they have obtained 14 times. This honor, according to Rodríguez Negrin, constitutes recognition of the sustainability of the results in almost a quarter of a century of work, the work with impact projects, exports, the awards from the Cuban Academy of Sciences that give them prestige, and the realization of scientific production in innovation.
