The severity of the failure in the wells leads to the forecast of a water cut until noon on Friday

A serious breakdown in the main pump of the two water collection wells at the mouth of the municipality affects the entire town of Riojaba, leaving a large part of the urban area and industrial areas without supply. «The big pump of the wells has been broken down, they have to take it to Zaragoza to fix it and what we thought could be solved by the same Thursday afternoon is going to last until noon this Friday – explains the mayor of Agriculture, Livestock and Water of the Alfareño City Council, Guadalupe López. -. Let’s hope that at noon it will be resolved and there will be water throughout the town normally.

As a consequence of this breakdown, the City Council launched a message to citizens early this Thursday morning to warn that these problems result in the risk that “it is possible that throughout the day we will run out of water.” ».

Once the problems have been detected, the Municipal Water Service technicians are working on site to solve the problems detected and avoid the outage.

At first, the specialists were confident that with various materials from Barcelona they could solve the breakdown on the same Thursday afternoon. But the seriousness of the incident forces the transfer to Zaragoza for repair. And the City Council’s forecast is that from 8:00 in the morning this Friday they will return to work with the piece already fixed and be able to install it and once again pump water to the tanks on Mount La Plana, a height from which it is distributed to homes and companies.

While the incident is resolved, the City Council exposes the situation to the citizens and asks them to “make responsible use of water”, while apologizing for the inconvenience caused. This request for responsible use seeks to ensure that the water stored and offered by the tanks lasts as long as possible, at least until the problems are solved.

When the new infrastructure came into operation in December 2021 after an investment of 743,988.51 euros, the City Council and Government of La Rioja stressed the importance that, as a precaution against future breakdowns, it has two pumps and two collection wells. “Since the breakdown, the second pump has been working, but it is not capable of pumping water to the entire town, to have strength and pressure throughout the municipality,” said López. For this reason, since this Thursday morning there are areas of the town where a weak trickle of water reaches homes. But in others like Santa Clara, Carretil del Piteo, etc. They ran out of supply at 7:00 in the morning.

After notifying the population of the service cut-off through the various social networks and communication channels, the City Council has launched the device to alleviate its impact on the economic and usual activity of the city, bringing thousand-liter cisterns to sensitive places and filling the cisterns of the affected companies.

The collection wells came into operation in December 2021 as an emergency, in response to a historic flood of the Ebro that left those they were replacing without an electrical connection. Four months later, the infrastructure with two 25-meter-deep wells, twelve deeper than the previous ones, was already working, pumping 110,000 liters per second. Over the months, technicians have had to address several problems with the pumps, like the one this morning.
