Another challenge for communal hygiene in Cienfuegos

Approximate reading time: 1 minute, 47 seconds

Once again, the epidemiological situation of the province challenges environmental hygiene and sanitation, factors that can accelerate – or slow down – the transmission in this case of the oropouche virus, as occurs with other diseases such as dengue, to cite an example.

The recent detection of this disease in Cienfuegos—specifically in the municipalities of Abreus, Rodas and Health Area No. 8 of the provincial capital—points out the urgency of reviewing, with concern and concern, the presence of leaks, sewage, spills. of garbage, and many other phenomena that have been in the spotlight of this newspaper in recent years.

This commentator – and many other colleagues – have not given up the effort to reflect in these pages the multiple red lights to the detriment of cleanliness, and therefore the beauty of a city traditionally recognized for its neatness.

But in this case it is not only about the city’s appearance – which is not a minor issue – but also about the health of the people of Pearl, at risk if, given the rise in fever cases, we do not undertake a real offensive against the accumulations of water, garbage everywhere and, above all, against social indiscipline.

Grassing is common in multi-family building layouts.

The latter, an epidemic worse than any virus, caused by pathogenic agents such as indolence, has not yet been eradicated from our civic behavior either due to lack of awareness, or from those fines that provide monetary punishment that hurt the pocket so much.

Right now, in the tense economic scenario that the province, and the country, is experiencing, it would be easy to conclude that nothing can be done, given the lack of fuel necessary to move backhoes towards what are popularly known as “imprints” (massive urban cleaning actions for the purposes of week), or to supply fumigation equipment, for example.

However, and always under the premise that diseases are not only a public health problem, several solutions remain on the table: the call by mass organizations for sanitation in communities, for example, appears among the most effective.

It is enough to appreciate the excessive weeding around multi-family buildings and homes to understand the need to eliminate the habitat of the mosquito, a vector so common at this time of year and in times of energy crisis.

Likewise, the unclogging of drains in the middle of spring, the solution of leaks and cleaning of pits, are key initiatives and depend not only on the Aqueduct, but also on the common citizen, often responsible for the breakage of pipes and even streets, in an action with disastrous consequences for the city, as holes and other burdens present on public roads emerge.

Although the hygiene of Cienfuegos should not wait for an increase in diseases to correct its almost chronic failures, the current moment requires hard work to eliminate spontaneous micro-dumps, weeding and other phenomena that, although common or recurrent, do not stop being harmful, very harmful in sanitary terms for any environment.

Microlandfills constitute breeding grounds for the proliferation of vectors.
