Governor Ignacio Torres toured the port of Comodoro Rivadavia this Friday, within the framework of the beginning of the dredging work that will ensure better operation of the place and which is being carried out for the first time after twenty-eight years.

The budget for this work amounts to 4.6 million dollars, and will be financed with the Port Administration’s own funds and with the financial assistance of the Bank of the Province of Chubut.

On this occasion, the provincial leader was accompanied by the Minister of Production, Digna Hernando, and the port administrators of Puerto Madryn, Diego Pérez, and Comodoro Rivadavia, Favio Cambareri, in addition to other provincial officials who were also part of the tour. .

In this context, Torres explained that “the port of Comodoro Rivadavia was dredged for the last time 28 years ago, and was totally inoperative during this time, despite the fact that we all know the enormous potential it has.” In addition, he added: “It is essential that “We can strengthen our ports, and especially Comodoro, to be more competitive, to generate more work and to reactivate the sector.”

“The dredging was more than necessary for this port to be operational again, and thanks to this work we will be able to enhance the shipyard that we dreamed of so much for the city,” the head of the Chubut executive finally explained, adding that: ” Dredging, the enhancement of the shipyard and the Law for the Promotion of the Naval Industry are central axes for us to once again position the port of Comodoro Rivadavia in a preponderant place within the region.”

The dredging work involves the removal of approximately 255 thousand cubic meters of sediment accumulated in the dock and port area. This material will be deposited in the marine environment at a distance of 6.5 kilometers from the coastline, in a grid of 800 x 800 meters, where there will be environmental observers and construction inspectors on board, with satellite monitoring assistance.

It is expected that, after this intervention, the port’s operation will be maintained for 15 years until the next need for maintenance. The work will guarantee a minimum depth of 7 meters in the port and 10 meters in front of the Ultramar dock, ensuring operation 24 hours a day.

With the expansion of the dock’s draft, a significant boost is expected in foreign trade and the development of productive sectors linked to wind farms, the oil and gas industry, fishing and cement production. This will improve the port’s capacity for loading and unloading, facilitating the creation of regular routes for container ships, merchant ships and miscellaneous cargo.

The operational improvements will also allow the terminal to offer storage and loading services for refrigerated containers, also strengthening the implementation of renewable energy projects, such as Green Hydrogen.
