They confirmed the second death from leptospirosis in Córdoba – News

The Government of Córdoba, through the undersecretary of Health Strategies and Access to Health of the province, Laura López, confirmed the second death due to leptospirosis in the province. These are two adults aged 51 and 63, one an employee of a dairy farm and the other the owner of the establishment, located in Pasco, 215 kilometers south of the provincial capital.

The victims worked in a local dairy doing milking and animal handling tasks, like pigs and sheep. First, one of the patients died and the other was hospitalized with respiratory assistance. The second death was confirmed this Friday.

López explained in dialogue with Channel 10 that these are “atypical cases” and that the high-risk contact they had could not be identified. In addition, he indicated that the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (Senasa) carried out a control and the animals show the disease, so these are all the procedures that will be carried out in the field.

The disease is caused by a bacteria present in the urine of certain animals and is transmitted mainly by direct contact with infected urine or by ingestion of contaminated food and water.

Recommendations to prevent and control leptospirosis

The first prevention measure is to avoid direct exposure, and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) (rubber boots, overalls or impermeable clothing and gloves).

Additionally, it is recommended:

-Use personal protective equipment when carrying out deratization, weeding or cleaning of fields and wastelands.

-Combat rodents in homes and surroundings.

-Avoid immersion in potentially contaminated stagnant water, and prevent children from playing in puddles or mud.

-Keep yards and grounds free of trash and debris.
