Blood donation, an essential act of human support for patients, is experiencing a significant crisis. The decline in donation support for blood banks has led to a worrying situation, according to Jesus Ernesto de la Mazadelegate of the Mexican Red Cross in San Luis Potosi.

De la Maza pointed out that the blood donation crisis is evident, since many people refuse to donate and others do not meet the necessary requirements to be donors.

“There is a crisis in blood donation and I also regret that the Red Cross of San Luis Potosí does not have its own blood bank.”

Regarding the lack of donors, the delegate attributed part of this crisis to the consequences left by the covid-19 pandemic, as it has generated fear and changes in social behavior that have negatively affected blood banks.

“Covid-19 changed the way we handle ourselves and one of the consequences has been the reduction in blood donation,” he commented.

Given this panorama, de la Maza emphasized the importance of blood for the life and functioning of hospitals, since their ability to attend to emergencies and treatments that require transfusions is put at risk.

“Blood is fundamental, it is the medium with which we live. It is crucial that hospitals have it to care for the sick,” he declared.

Likewise, the delegate of the Mexican Red Cross made an urgent call to citizens to come and donate blood.

“Community solidarity and support are vital to overcoming this crisis and ensuring hospitals can continue saving lives.”

Finally, he said that donating blood is an act of generosity that can make the difference between life and death for many people, because in these critical moments, every donation counts.
