The family of Agustín Cabrera, a 11-year-old boy who died on May 20 at the Atacama Regional Hospitaldemonstrated outside the premises accusing medical negligence.

According to family members, a laboratory test showed that the minor carried the bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes, known as the “killer bacteria,” reported El Diario de Atacama. However, they were informed that the cause of death was meningitis.

Yerko Barraza, Agustín’s grandfather, told the aforementioned media that the boy began to feel bad one Saturday, with a headache and pain in his leg. “At the Paipote SAR, they injected him because he was vomiting and fevered, and they gave him ibuprofen for a common cold.”, he indicated. Despite initial care, symptoms persisted and worsened.

On Sunday, Agustín was taken to the hospital again by his other grandfather, Luis Cabrera. “The child came with a lot of headache, with heat in his body and low saturation. He spent four hours waiting to be attended to. “He vomited a little blood and the nurse said it was because he hadn’t eaten anything,” Cabrera said. Finally, he was hospitalized at 8 p.m., but his condition continued to deteriorate.

“The Pediatrics doctor wondered why they had not sent him with oxygen, since he was very bad. He was restless, he took out the IVs, and the doctor ordered that they give him an injection to calm him down. He fell asleep, they gave him breathing with a machine, but he died,” added the child’s relative.

The hospital issued a statement stating that “the corresponding clinical services were carried out for this type of diagnosis”. For its part, the Atacama Prosecutor’s Office reported that a prosecutor from the Copiapó Local Prosecutor’s Office met with the family on the same day of the death and Instructed investigative proceedings to the Homicide Brigade of the Investigative Police (PDI), in addition to ordering the corresponding autopsy. The investigation is ongoing.
