Colombia announces that it will suspend coal exports to Israel

(CNN Spanish) — The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, announced this Saturday that he will suspend, through a decree, the export of coal to Israel “until the genocide stops,” in reference to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

“We are going to suspend coal exports to Israel until the genocide stops,” the president said in a publication on the X social network in which he also included the draft resolution.

The decree, which will come into force 5 days from its publication, details that exports of hard coal and briquettes (charcoal) will be suspended until the orders of provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice in the application process are complied with. of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, which ordered Israel to stop its military operations in Rafah.

The announcement comes a month after the Colombian government decided to break diplomatic relations with Israel.

¨The escalation of military actions, the systematic failure to comply with the provisional measures orders of the International Court of Justice and the worsening of the humanitarian situation constitute a risk for international peace and security and, consequently, is an issue that affects the national security”, adds the text of the decree.

CNN is seeking comment from the Israeli government. Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has consistently insisted that its war in Gaza is being fought in self-defense and that its leaders have shown no genocidal intent.
