Currently, Sancti Spíritus is the territory with the largest aquarium in Cuba, La Zaza, and is going through one of the biggest crises in dammed waters due to the drought that has occurred so far this year.

This situation was evaluated the day before by Inés María Chapman, Cuban deputy prime minister, who recommended that the authorities of the institute and the province review every detail, given forecasts of a very active cyclone season.

He insisted on the need to arrange the conditions well and comply with the restrictions regarding the volume to be impounded in the Zaza to preserve and provide security to the populations located downstream of the curtain.

Check everything, he noted, the dam spillway and the path that the water travels to the Tunas de Zaza area, each place in the flood area and go to each site to be able to warn in time of any situation with the floods.

He pointed out the measures to save people’s lives and material resources because we live, he said, in very complex conditions and it has not rained for a long time.

He also commented on the importance of this reservoir in the socioeconomic development of the region and the country, its waters benefit the rice harvest in the South of Jíbaro and for the transfer to Ciego de Ávila, he indicated.

While Antonio Rodríguez, president of the INRH, who accompanied Chapman, warned that La Zaza is 13 percent full, with aspirations for the forecasts of intense rains for the cyclonic stage to be fulfilled.

Regarding the preparations for the season, he pointed out, all the conditions to operate the Zaza dam are assured, the operation of the hydromechanisms has been checked, we have power from the national electrical system, but also a generating set to operate the gates.
