This Friday afternoon, a call in the Yungay neighborhood, in the center of the capital, culminated with the intervention of Carabineros, near the house of President Gabriel Boric. The demonstration was organized in response to the report of a group rape of a schoolgirl that occurred in the sector and is being investigated by the Investigative Police (PDI).

The call brought together a significant group of people in the historic Santiago neighborhood, where a cacerolazo was held called through social networks. The protesters moved towards the vicinity of the presidential residence—whose perimeter has a strong police presence—demanding justice and answers to the rape complaint.

Carabineros intervened to normalize traffic, and preliminarily, they reported the arrest of four people: two men and two women. These individuals were taken to a police precinct while the facts related to the disorders are clarified.

Karina Nogales, a neighbor and member of the Feminist Assembly of the Yungay neighborhood, spoke about the organization of the demonstration and the situation of sexist and gender violence that they denounced. “The Assembly is an organizational space that includes the neighbors and the sexual and gender dissidents of the neighborhood since the social outbreak. This organization serves as a tool to gather in the streets and denounce sexist and gender violence,” Nogales stated on the radio. Biobio.

The Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, referred to the reported incident and assured that “of course the government considers that this is an extremely serious crime and precisely because it is extremely serious what matters here is that the evidence and the witnesses and The background information that is surely being taken and collected in terms of investigation is compelling to be able to effectively, eventually, demonstrate responsibility and apply the severe sanctions that I believe the entire country expects.”

According to preliminary reports, at least four individuals put the victim into a vehicle and abused her, then abandoned her in the Cerrillos commune. The investigation of the case, which has confidential status and is led by the Sexual Crimes Investigative Brigade (Bipe) of the PDI and the North Central Metropolitan Regional Prosecutor’s Office, is ongoing and background information is being compiled.
