  • DAGMA has completed 500 tree individuals on one of the city’s ecological corridors.
  • Cali’s trees have stored, in their biomass, 84,601 tons of CO2.

Santiago de Cali, June 8, 2024

Santiago de Cali is becoming more green in different spaces, on this occasion the planting of trees continues in the corridor located between 25th Street between Carreras 1 and 7, where several massive plantings of trees of native species allow, not only to beautify this area, but also protect biodiversity.

Today, in a joint effort to promote sustainability where the DAGMA, the Metropolitan Police and the Government of Valle del Cauca participated, 120 trees were planted during the day, marking a milestone in the community’s commitment to the environment. The initiative not only seeks to improve the aesthetics of the city, but also contribute to the mitigation of climate change, improve air quality and provide habitats for local fauna.

Let us remember that Cali went from having 280,000 trees to 382,655; The presence of native species increased, from 34% to 54%, and its first practical application recommends intervening approximately 5,000 trees at risk, a figure that will probably increase during this rainy season. That is why these types of activities allow the protection and growth of the city’s biodiversity.

The deputy director of DAGMA, Sara Rodas, said that “with today’s planting we are completing 500 tree individuals on the ecological corridor, an area of great importance for the city, when this corridor is reconstituted in all its flora it will be a strategic area for the different species, being a commitment as an environmental authority and thanking the participation of the different organizations and the community.”

This event is a reminder of the power of community action and different entities on the importance of caring for our natural environment. We invite all citizens to join future events and be an active part in building a greener and healthier Cali.

Some information to take into account

  • The commune with the most tree individuals is 17: 54,633. The one with the least is number 20: 2,739.
  • Communes 14, 20 and 21 almost doubled the number of individuals between 2015 and 2023.
  • The trees in commune 2 prevent 16,500 cubic meters of runoff per year (helps prevent flooding and landslides).
