The traditional Black and White Carnival of Nariño will bring all its flavor and joy to the Córdoba Livestock Fair this year. A delegation from the southern department of the country will participate in the folklore parade of the fair with a sample of its famous festival, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

The presence of Nariño at the Córdoba Livestock Fair is part of the Government’s commitment to enrich the event’s programming with cultural manifestations from other regions of the country. “We will have Nariño as a guest department within the framework of the fair for the folklore parade. It comes with a sample of its Black and White festival,” announced Governor Erasmo Zuleta Bechara.

The Nariñense delegation will be made up of about 150 artists, including musicians, dancers and theater artists, who will display color, music and tradition in the streets of Montería. The display of the Black and White Carnival is expected to be one of the high points of the folkloric parade, which this year will feature the participation of more than 1,500 artists from the 30 municipalities of Córdoba.

“We want the fair to have a great national component so that it begins to truly position itself as one of those great events in the country, especially in the Caribbean region,” said Zuleta. Nariño’s presence is added to the participation of other special guests, such as the queen of the Barranquilla Carnival and folklore groups from other departments.

The Carnival of Blacks and Whites of Pasto is one of the most important festivals in Colombia, which each year attracts thousands of national and foreign visitors. Its origin dates back to colonial times and combines indigenous, African and European traditions in an explosion of creativity, irreverence and fun. UNESCO declared it Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, highlighting its value as an expression of the country’s cultural diversity.

The exhibition that will be presented at the Córdoba Livestock Fair will include some of the most representative elements of the carnival, such as the parades of choreographic groups, the troupes, the floats and the typical characters. Those attending the folkloric parade will be able to enjoy rhythms such as sonsureño, bambuco and torbellino, performed by bands of traditional musicians.
