The Electrical Union (UNE) predicted blackouts for this Saturday due to a generation deficit of 550 MW, which represents a fifth of the country’s demand.

In an information note the UNE explained on Facebook that unit 6 of the Nuevitas Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE), unit 6 of the CTE Rente and units 1 and 2 of the CTE Felton are stopped due to breakdowns; and unit 1 of the CTE Santa Cruz, unit 5 of the CTE Nuevitas and unit 5 of the CTE Rente are under maintenance.

These effects limit thermal generation to about 340 MW; to which 132 MW are added because 35 distributed generation plants are out of service due to lack of fuel.

“For the peak hour, an availability of 2,370 MW is estimated and a maximum demand of 2,850 MW, for a deficit of 480 MW, so if the expected conditions continue, a affectation of 550 MW at this time,” UNE stated.

On Friday the service was affected by capacity deficit from 9:07 a.m. to 10:51 p.m., with a maximum impact of 598 MW at 6:00 p.m., which coincided with peak hour.

As usual, Cubans reacted indignantly to the announcement, in a context where blackouts do not let up and last up to 20 hours in some regions of the island.

“The worst thing that we Cubans have is not having land borders, whoever does not have money is condemned on this island to die of mortification and impotence without mentioning others that go without saying,” commented one Internet user.
