Students from the University of Chile won first place in the NTT DATA Hack the Challenge

In the fourth edition of the event organized by NTT DATA Chile, there were six teams made up of university students and/or recent graduates, who developed solutions for the mining industry, using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Digital Twins, Digital Architecture and Data & Analytics.

The event lasted a total of 3 days, where the teams developed a solution for the mining industry using Generative Artificial Intelligence, Data & Analytics, Digital Twins and Digital Architecture.

With the purpose of continuing to promote talent and skill development in digital transformation processes, NTT DATA Chile held the Hack the Challenge for the 4th consecutive year, a Hackathon that challenges students and/or recent graduates of STEM careers to propose a solution for the mining industry, focused on improving production, reducing costs and promoting efficiency and safety at work using a predictive model with generative artificial intelligence, digital twins, data & analytics, and digital architecture.

This year’s challenge focused on a common problem for the mining industry: bearing failures, which cause unscheduled stops and costly corrective actions, affecting the results of the process. In this context, the six participating teams – Intelli Team (Universidad del Bío-Bío), IRAM (Universidad Católica del Norte), Mining Track (Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María de Valparaíso), Rolling in the deep (Universidad de Chile), Bearing Guard (Universidad del Bío-Bío) and Predict Ball System (Universidad de Concepción) – worked on innovative solutions to respond to the problem.

Each team had more than 24 hours of continuous work, in which they were guided by four mentors from NTT DATA Chile, who provided them with advice on Digital Twins, Data & Analytics, mining and pitch development.

The third day was decisive, as the teams presented their solution to the jury made up of Adolfo Cuenca, CEO of NTT DATA Chile; Carolina Zambrano, Deputy Manager of Data Engineering at Antofagasta Minerals; Denisse Garnica, Partner Head of Health, Insurance & Public Sector at NTT DATA Chille and Carlos Toro, Head of Data & Analytics at NTT DATA Chile.

The winning team was Rolling in the Deep, made up of Benjamín Brito, Sebastián Guzmán, Martín Reyes and Diego Sanz, students from the University of Chile, who integrated different technological solutions and resources into their proposal, using case analysis with Artificial Intelligence tools. . “When we had our first confrontation with the solution, we focused on the technical and when talking with people who participated in previous years we realized that there are many aspects to evaluate when approaching the solution of projects and that real and executable proposals can be made,” commented Diego Sanz.

The CEO of NTT DATA Chile emphasized that talent is the company’s greatest value and that spaces like this Hackathon are an opportunity to continue promoting all the talent in the country. He commented that “the participants have shown us that the new generations increasingly come with more knowledge, but most importantly, with more desire.” The executive also highlighted the spirit of teamwork to design solutions that respond to extreme situations, “I was very positively surprised by how all the teams leveraged themselves in a very short period, on the strengths that each of the members had and that is also a very important lesson not only for them, but for us.”

Second and third place

Second place was obtained by the Intelli Team group, made up of Alex Tardón, Benjamín Machuca, Felipe Vásquez and Alejandro Torres, from the University of Bio-Bío, who presented an innovative solution for the wear and detection of mining bearings. Finally, third place went to MiningTrack, with the participation of Tomás Barros, Pedro Yáñez, Catalina Cortés and Ricardo Oralguiaga from the Federico Santa María Technical University, located in the Valparaíso region. The group presented an early solution model for bearing failures, highlighting the use of green energy.

“Initiatives like Hack the Challenge allow us to see that there is plenty of talent in the country and it is really gratifying, because through this we can give sustainability to the technology industry,” said Denisse Garnica, Partner Head of Health, Insurance & Public Sector at NTT DATA Chile.

It should be noted that the winning teams received prizes such as Play Station 5 and Nintendo Switch video game consoles, Smart Watch, Alexa and Gift Card for different amounts on Amazon.
