Ideam announces the arrival of new tropical waves in the country: How will the climate change?

The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) issued an alert for the arrival of six tropical waves to Colombiawhich would impact the national territory this weekend that runs until June 10, 2024.

According to the entity, this phenomenon will mainly affect the Caribbean region and the northern Andean region, with departments such as La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar and Córdoba in the spotlight, in addition to the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Ghisliane Echeverry, director of Ideam, noted that “this year’s cyclone season will be much more intense than usual, with an 85 percent probability of high activity.” This warning is supported by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which also anticipates a busier season than normal.

The cyclone season will extend from June to November 30, although Ideam clarified that these phenomena may occur outside of these dates.

Meteorologist from the Ideam Forecast and Warning Service Office, Leidy Rodríguez, explained that tropical waves can vary considerably in intensity and amount of precipitation.

According to Rodríguez, “Tropical waves are atmospheric disturbances that can increase cloudiness and precipitation, and in some cases, evolve into tropical cyclones.”

What will be the impact of tropical waves in Colombia?

The main impact of these tropical waves will be the significant increase in precipitation, especially on Monday, June 10, when the fifth tropical wave is expected to reach the Colombian coasts. The combination of these waves could generate intense and prolonged rains, increasing the risk of landslides and river flooding.

Armando Rodríguez, spokesperson for Ideam, emphasized the importance of preparation for these climatic events: “We recommend that the entities of the National System for Disaster Risk Management and the National Environmental System activate the necessary contingency plans to mitigate the adverse effects of these intense rains.”

The population should also take preventive measures such as cleaning drains and channels to avoid flooding and checking roofs and structures to minimize material damage.

Authorities urge residents of affected areas to stay informed and follow official recommendations. It is vital that communities are prepared to evacuate if necessary and have access to safe shelters. Additionally, it is recommended to avoid outdoor activities during periods of heavy rain and storms.
