Agents belonging to the La Rioja Police Headquarters warn of the new type of scam aimed at older people using the “neighbor scam” technique. The Police have learned that this modality is being carried out both in La Rioja and in the different neighboring communities.
The modus operandi of the criminal method consists of locating the home of elderly people, pretending to be a relative of a neighbor and, under the pretext of waiting for a friend or relative, waiting at the home of the elderly person in order to then steal jewelry, valuables and money.
To do this, criminals monitor neighboring communities and select elderly victims. The scammer obtained personal information from victims to credibly present himself as a relative or close friend of a neighbor. Afterwards, he would approach the victims, either knocking on their door or provoking an encounter on the street.
The Police reminds that it is important for all citizens to be alert and take extreme precautions against this type of crime. First of all, we must be on alert and be very cautious if a person approaches us with any type of pretext, we must be suspicious and we must never provide personal data to strangers, and even less allow access to our home. If you have contact on the portal or in the vicinity of it with people who give us suspicions at the slightest doubt, we can call Room 091 of the National Police as soon as possible.
In addition, the National Police reminds the entire population, especially the elderly, not to open their home or allow access to it to people who claim to belong to home supply companies, if you have not requested them (gas technicians , electricity, water or internet).
