  • “Food safety is everyone’s business” is the motto of the 2024 campaign

Every June 7, World Food Safety Day is commemorated, an event that seeks to inspire actions to help prevent, detect and manage food-borne risks, thereby contributing to food security and people’s health, by reduce Foodborne Illnesses (ETA).

Regarding this, the Seremi of Health (s), Mauricio Bertoglia Calvetti, indicated that “ETAs are diseases that can seriously affect the quality of life of people and that can cause death to those who suffer from them and can be contract by consuming foods that have become unsafe or contaminated water. Therefore, it is necessary for people to become aware of the risks involved in consuming foods that do not have every stage of their food chain guaranteed, from production to preparation and consumption.”

In this sense, Bertoglia added that “for this reason, as a regional Health Authority, we annually execute an inspection plan for facilities with high, medium and low health risk. Added to this is the work we do as an institution in terms of food sampling, epidemiological surveillance of these diseases and we reinforce preventive and informative field work for the community and inspection in different places on key dates such as National Holidays. , the end of the year and Easter, among others, where the consumption of different products increases.”

Among the recommendations provided by the SEREMI de Salud to avoid Foodborne Diseases, are:

  • Maintain cleanliness of surfaces where food will be prepared.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before and after preparing and consuming food.
  • Wash and disinfect utensils and equipment used during preparation.
  • Protect food and kitchen areas from insects, pests and other animals.
  • Separate raw foods from cooked foods.
  • Store food in protected places and in covered containers.
  • Cook food completely.
  • Keep food at appropriate temperatures.
  • Always use drinking water and safe raw materials.
  • Do not eat food after its expiration date.
